 Answer: William Sydney Porter, the writer of the love story, The Gift of the Magi, is known more familiarly by his pen name, O.Henry. In his story,  Della wanted to give a Christmas present to her husband Jim. But she did not have enough money to buy one. So, she thought of selling her beautiful long hair. She undid her hair, let it fall about her, and looked at its reflection in the pier-glass. Then she did it up again. and put on her old brown jacket and old brown hat. After that, she rushed out of her home and soon reached a shop dealing with hair goods of all kinds. The owner of the shop was Mme. Sofronie. Della asked her if she would buy her hair. Mme Sofronie asked Della to take her hat off so that she might have a close view of her hair. Della untied her hair. Madame lifted it with her experienced hand by way of examination and offered to pay twenty dollars for it. Della agreed to sell her hair for the amount Thus she sold her hair to purchase a present for her husband.
