The Solitary Reaper Critical Estimate

William Wordsworth is a great lover of man and nature. He is a lover of simple rustic life. His romantic imagination treats such simple people with an idealistic charm. Hence the song of an ordinary highland girl appeals to him so greatly. The poem The Solitary Reaper is a pure lyric without any touch of philosophy or mysticism. The simplicity of diction and the use of commonplace words enhance the lyrical quality of the poem. In the second stanza, the poet has created two beautiful pictures with the help of a few words. The picture of the highland girl cutting and binding the grain alone is graphic and concrete. In his suggestion of the theme of the girl's song, the poet has looked into the hoary past as well as to the familiar present. The poet carries in his memory the sadly sweet note of the song of the girl to ruminate in the future. Beautiful suggestive phrases like 'melancholy strain', 'vale pro- found', 'shady haunt', 'plaintive numbers' add to the beauty of the poem.
