Mansfield explored the theme of affection and happiness. And through this point,
She proves that society is dominated by males. George and Fanny are very much in
love throughout the story. They are very physically close to each other. And
Katherine Mansfield uses bright colors in the story to highlight their overall
happiness. The use of bright colors is remarkable when the couple is in the cab
on their way to the restaurant. Also, she uses shaded green and gold plane trees
and the streets smelling like lemons. The color pink and white umbrellas and
green tables, they are passing described an inner sense. These descriptions are
important when the lovers sitting in the restaurant. The use of dark colors
highlights some doubts about her marriage.

Fanny has a lot of doubt and
questions for George. But her life has changed. She cannot press him more.
George never gives consideration to Fanny in the story. But, it is true that he
is polite throughout the story. He always turns Fanny’s questions into questions
of his own. He never gives a direct answer to the question of Fanny. It is
noticeable when Fanny is in the cab with him. At this point, George begins to
tell her about the white mouse he had when he was a child. This kind of
conversation pure indicates feminism.
Actually, George controls Fanny. It is
clear that Mansfield keeps a spotlight on marriage itself. Though, George
controls himself in many scenes. Here, according to the writer, Mansfield that
male in general remains in control of their marriages. And wives are subservient
to husbands across life.
At the end of the story, Fanny explores the theme of
doubt that is more interesting. Fanny shocks about how other people might live
their life. And so many people might be unhappy. And this point George has a
different feeling. Mansfield says that they both have very different opinions on
the same thing such as about an old man. For Fanny, it leads to her questioning
things. And for George, the old man is a figure of fun. Though, he is grateful
as he is only setting out on life with Fanny. And that their life together is at
the beginning. However, George has some excitement about his future with Fanny.
He is still not thinking as she is thinking. He takes control again at the end
of the story and before Fanny can answer him about leaving the restaurant they
have both left. George is not only controlling his and her environment but he is
doing so without listening to her. Again George is thinking about no one but
himself. Even though, he is excited about the prospect of a new life with Fanny.
Definitely, things will not really change for George. After all, they are a
happy couple.
