“Please, God, make him think I’m still pretty”.

Who said this? Under what circumstances was it said?

The Gift of the Magi
Della

Answer: The above sentence has been taken from the story; “The Gift of the Magi”, which is written by William Sydney Porter (Olivier Henry). In this love story, Della said this in whisper. She sold her beautiful hair for twenty dollars and purchased with the amount a platinum fob chain as Christmas present for her husband, Jim. She felt nervous to think that Jim might be very angry with her when he would find her without hair. She curled her hair with the curling irons. She then looked like a truant boy or a Coney Island chorus girl. Then she anxiously waited for Jim. After a while, she heard the footsteps of Jim on the stairs and turned white in fear. She used to utter silent prayers even on trivial occasions. Now she was afraid that Jim might find her looks much less pleasing. So, she prayed to God that Jim might still find her pretty.
